Capture Me.

whatcriscilikes:

I have developed a habit of taking a lesson away with me at the close of recent weekends.  This past weekend left me with a resounding question that I have not yet answered.

If you read me regularly, you might remember a number of confessions on my nervous habit of recording and documenting.  I revel in this, however this weekend my dear friend mentioned how she wanted me to remember the exact feeling that I had at that moment.  I stood still, concentrated, took it in, and did my best to let the feelings that I was having settle deep.  For the rest of the weekend, I couldn’t shake her request.  We both knew that what she had asked of me was not easy.  Once the moment passes, the environment changes, my state of mind is altered, or I just wake up to see the sunlight, the feeling would no longer be the same, even if I could remember the level of intensity, the words spoken, and the visual image.

What is the best method of documenting a feeling? This question has been asked, and can be attributed to the main motivation for the arts, but is there a simple answer.

My first method is words, but it seems that the feelings that I am having while reading the words still remain dominant over the feelings I had when I wrote them.

Second, is visual.  A picture does provide more details and less thought to process, so does this mean that my feelings at the time the photo was taken are more dominant then the state of mind I have upon viewing it?

Thirdly, and I believe the most effective, is audio.  Music tends not only to completely uncover feelings that I am not experiencing at the time, and transform me to the place I was when I first experienced them, but it happens with a level of intensity that I have not yet experienced with writing or photo triggers.  The only catch with music, obviously. is the control.  A perfectly reflective song will not be playing or easily associated with each feeling I try to preserve.

Although clearly not the answer, I do think that smell can accomplish this once in a blue moon.

I haven’t found an answer yet.  I just hope I can achieve what my dear friend has asked.
